NBA and FIBA collaborate with the NBL to host Basketball Without Borders in Australia

PERTH (Australia) – The National Basketball Association (NBA) and the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) in collaboration with the National Basketball League (NBL), today announced that the 14thedition of Basketball Without Borders (BWB) Asia will be held at Warwick Stadium in Perth from September 19.  The camp, which marks the third time BWB Asia will take place in Australia, will be part of the first-ever HoopsFest, a multi-day basketball competition and fan event supported by Basketball Australia celebrating the biggest weekend in Australian basketball history.

BWB Asia 2024 will bring together 30 boys and 30 girls ages 17 and under from across Asia-Pacific to learn directly from current and former NBA, WNBA and FIBA players, legends and coaches and compete alongside their peers from across the region.  The campers and coaches, who will be announced prior to the camp, will also take part in life-skills, leadership development and social responsibility programming.

Hosted by the NBL and Basketball Australia, HoopsFest will feature a series of basketball tournaments, events and festivities, which will bring together the Australian basketball community in Perth, Western Australia.

FIBA Oceania President, and FIBA First Vice President David Reid said, “FIBA is thrilled to partner with the NBA once again to bring Basketball Without Borders Asia to Australia with the host city of Perth.  The integration with Basketball Australia and the NBL through HoopsFest is an outstanding example of how basketball collaboration can be achieved.  BWB Asia provides a unique opportunity for talented young players from across the Asia-Pacific region to develop their skills and compete against their peers under the guidance of experienced coaches and mentors.  We are confident that this camp will help to identify future stars of the game.”

BWB Asia 2024 will be supported by Nike, a global partner of BWB since 2002, which will outfit participants with Nike apparel and footwear, and Gatorade, which will keep players and coaches hydrated throughout the camp.

Forty-one former BWB campers were among the record 125 international players on opening-night rosters for the 2023-24 NBA season, including 2022 NBA All-Rookie Second Team member and NBA Global Academy graduate Josh Giddey (Chicago Bulls; Australia; BWB Asia 2018 and BWB Global 2020), Josh Green (Charlotte Hornets; Australia; BWB Global 2018) and 2020 NBA All-Rookie Second Team member Rui Hachimura (Los Angeles Lakers; Japan; BWB Global 2016).

NBA Senior Vice President, Head of International Basketball Operations Troy Justice said, “Our collaboration with the NBL and FIBA presents a unique opportunity to showcase BWB Asia as part of the first-ever HoopsFest in Perth as part of our commitment to developing elite players from the region as players and leaders.  This year’s camp will once again provide a platform for top prospects to compete alongside their peers and learn from some of the world’s best players and coaches and deliver a truly memorable experience to participants who also get to be a part of the NBL’s weeklong celebration of basketball.”

BWB has reached more than 4,500 participants from 142 countries and territories since 2001, with 127 former campers advancing to the NBA or WNBA.  The NBA and FIBA have staged 77 BWB camps in 51 cities across 33 countries on six continents.
